May 19 Restoring River Habitat Seminar
River Forest and River Meadow—
Special River Habitat Restoration Seminar
What could a healthy river forest and river meadow look like at Farragut Avenue where the Saw Mill River meanders? Area residents will have a chance to learn about this at the Saw Mill River Coalition's all-day River Habitat Restoration Seminar, led by Sven Hoeger of Creative Habitat Corp, on Saturday, May 19, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The classroom session, beginning at 9:30am will be at Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers (Dudley Road off North Broadway); field work will continue at the Farragut site from 11 am to 3:30 pm. There is no cost for the seminar.
The Coalition is embarking on a multi-phase project to bring about a restoration of the Farragut Avenue site which is alongside the South County Trailway. The field work of the May 19th seminar will provide the information needed to apply for grant funding for the actual restoration work to be conducted in 2007-2008 at the site. Area residents, including past volunteers on vine cutting, clean-up, and restoration efforts are encouraged to attend.
A habitat and river restoration specialist, Mr. Hoeger will describe the elements of stream bank restoration projects, including the critical need for riparian buffers and how they function for the health of wildlife and stream life. Field work will include taking measurements and conducting plant and bird inventories under the supervision of Mr. Hoeger and Westchester County Parks' staff.
The seminar is funded by the Westchester Community Foundation.

Directions: Lenoir Preserve: Saw Mill River Parkway. Exit at Executive Blvd. Proceed to the end of Executive Blvd. and make a right turn onto North Broadway, Yonkers. Within ¼ mile, make a left onto Dudley Street; entrance is on the left. Farragut Avenue site: Saw Mill River Parkway Exit 13 (going NORTH ONLY), or access from Saw Mill River Road (Ardsley side), park at the County Trailway parking lot.
