Yard Tips

  • Do not rake leaves and leave them in the street or gutter, as they will be carried by stormwater to the river
  • Maintain a buffer strip of unmowed, natural vegetation alongside streams, ponds, and wetlands to trap excess fertilizers and sediment
  • Keep grass at a length of at least 3 to 4 inches
  • If you live in an area that is concerned with draught, or if you want to conserve water, use xeriscaping (the environmental design of land using various methods such as rock formations and desert plants to minimize the need for water use)
  • Minimize fertilizer and pesticide use
  • Do not plant nonnative species in your yard
